Optical is an infared light beam looking through a slotted wheel, in my
case it's about 10-12 slots on the disk. Hall-effect is a transistor that's
affected by a magnet, typically 2-3 magnets per revolution of the disk
they're mounted on.
I have no idea how many ticks per degree. It all depends on your look
angle. I'm at 52.1N, 106.5W, and here G5 is recorded at 4823, F3 is recorded
at 4823, and G1 at 4880.
I changed the arm when I got my original Monterey 90, back about 1989
or so, simply because it came with a new one. The old arm is at my
daughter's place now, after sitting in my garage for 6-7 years. I have seen
the need to replace the optical sensor board, but I've 99% of the time been
able to repair them by simply changing the switching transistor.
I've never had any problems with the mechanical action except when the
weather cover was not properly installed, or the motor was mounted upside
down, not allowing anu water that gets inside to drain out. I've never even
had to open one up to repack the grease in the gear mechanism, like I have
with other brands.
