Diesel locomotives with the air intake relocated to make
it more likely in tunnels to draw in fresh air rather than hot
exhaust air. The Southern Pacific Railroad in the U.S.A. was
the principal proponent for use especially on their line over the
Sierra Nevada mountains (and Donner Pass) which has a great many
tunnels. I believe the Rio Grande (Denver and Rio Grande Western)
also made considerable use of them on their similarly tunnel-
intensive line over the Rocky Mountains.
Of course, neither company is still in existence; the Rio
Grande bought the Southern Pacific (and adopted the name Southern
Pacific for the combined companies) and then the Union Pacific
bought the Southern Pacific last year.
"Tunnel motors" continue in operation, normally indicated
by the letter "T" at the end of the model designation.
It sounds like the motivation for this modified design
was similar to that for the modifications to certain Australian
locomotives you were involved in.
