One of my nephews took a couple of years "off" after college to 
get a real job!  He wanted to play in the NHL and had a chance 
to give it a go.  

As it is, he was a very good player.  But, taking that time off 
and also getting married took the edge off.  The good thing, though, 
is that he did give it a try and decided he didn't want it that 
bad any more.
