It'll be interesting to see if he keeps to the promise he made yesterday -
he'll be an ally of the US provided that the US stops backing away from its
obligations on global warming issues, including Kyoto. He's also strongly
anti-Iraq war, so don't expect any improvement in that area.

The general opinion of those who make a living from political analysis
seems to be that while he's more pro-American than Chirac, he's also more
determined to be effective. He was elected because the French people want a
strong leader to sort out the mess(es) they are in, and he knows if he
doesn't deliver he'll be in deep trouble. So if he has to choose between
what's good for France and what's good for the US, it'll be no contest.

Meanwhile, the dollar keeps dropping as investors continue to shift their
attentions to other economies. It's only your services sector that's
keeping you afloat for the moment, but it's leaking to other countries with
lower costs just like your manufacturing sector did.
