I like QEdit a lot but this one problem with tabs is driving me batty...
First off, there appears to be a bug with the tabs:
When I type the tab character (ASCII decimal 9 [Alt-9]) in the
Replace menu and proceed to replace all Ascii Alt-9's with a space,
and set the options to "No prompting", I get the "Changing...."
prompt and then QEdit freezes up - everytime! When I do the same
with prompting, and I say "Yes" to replace the tab character,
it won't do it, it will freeze up on that command, but it will
allow you to say "No".
I have tried setting ALL options in General and Advanced that
have anything to do with tabs (ie. AutoIndent, Sticky AutoIndent,
Remove trailing blanks, etc.) to "NO" in the hopes that one of
these options is screwing things up.
The reason I need to remove the tabs from my files is because they
wreak havoc on the formatting when loaded in other programs.
Funny thing is, I never even entered tabs in the first place!
Another funny thing is that the Global Replace with No Prompting
will work in replacing tab characters with spaces when I use the
ToggleTabsOut command (the Alt-V cmd where you get to see those
nasty tab characters!). However, when it does a global replace,
it strangely does not remove all of those characters! It only
removes a number at a time, and then when you repeat the same
command, it removes a few more, and then you repeat, and then
a few more until... finally all tab characters are removed!
The fun begins when I try inserting spaces with the space bar
in the TabsOut mode (where you see the tab char.'s), the tabs
are automatically inserted again! If I type spaces in the regular
mode (where tab char.'s are hidden) it looks fine, except when I load it
into another program, my formatting is all screwed up and those tab
char.'s are back again! Also, as soon as I do ToggleTabsOut they
show up again. I simply can not get rid of tab characters no matter
what it seems!
I'm using QEdit 2.15v but I seem to recall having the same problem
with v3.x. Does anybody know what's happening hear and how to edit a
text file without QEdit automatically inserting hidden tab characters
everytime you type a blank space?
Thanks.
