| subject: | Revisiting XP |
I have a single-core laptop running Lubuntu that I use as my day-to-day laptop. Just for kicks, I put my old XP drive in and fired it up. Despite all of the doom and gloom surrounding XP, if you google that registry hack to make XP think it's XP embedded, patches are available (and I downloaded a ton of patches, an upgrade to my virus program, and updates to Firefox and Thunderbird...) The intel wireless card wouldn't connect with my new router, I had to remove the card drivers and reinstall them. A couple of times XP hung for minutes while trying to process all of the updates. Overall, it's good to know XP's still working. While not as smoothly running as Linux on a slow laptop, the power management seems much better -- Windows seems to report longer run times than Lubuntu. I put my Lubuntu drive back in; I was able to get DOSBOX working with all of my DOS programs, and WINE has been good at running most of my Windows apps. If XP supports my PATA SSD, I might try installing it on my SSD and see how the laptop does with it. --- SBBSecho 2.27-Win32* Origin: http://realitycheckbbs.org | tomorrow's retro tech (1:218/700) SEEN-BY: 3/0 633/267 280 640/384 712/0 620 848 770/1 @PATH: 218/700 261/38 712/848 633/267 |
