I would rather prefer MsgEd to GoldEd, but the time I tried

Would not even compile!? That cannot be.

And it is absolutely not connected with the version of Linux that you are
using. I remember that Msged sometimes checks for the verison of SMAPI, and
if it does not suit, some functions of Msged are disabled, but that's all.

I'd suggest that while we fix JAM (actually I think it already is fixed
now) you get either the latest release or the latest current versions of
smapi and msged and report what troubles you have compiling this on your
Linux version. 

I am absolutely positive that a Linux upgrade will not be necessary.
