I follow your line of reasoning, but it's a hard to deny fact that in the
current state of affairs, only nuclear energy is capable of generating the
amount of power required.
 
Tidal, sun, wind ... it's all nice but still too futuristic to replace nuclear.
 
BTW, in the end-life assessment nuclear reactors DO contribute to a carbon
footprint.
