At which time about 300,000 Chinese 'volunteers' came across the border and overwhelmed the UN forces with 'human wave' attacks, pushing the UN forces back below the 38th parallel. Ridgway halted the retreat and started pushing the Chinese back north (with horrendous casualties) using overwhelming amounts of land and sea based artillery and bombing. When that happened the North suddenly decided to get serious at the peace talks at Panmunjom.
