EC>>> the protection of the Geneva Convention. They are not prisoners of
 EC>>> war. If,

DC>> Why? Just because W says they aren't?

BA>> Because there is no 'war' (in the traditional sense) in progress.

DD>> And hasn't been one since the end of WWII - no matter what the media
 DD>> and politicians say.

DC> The Korean War comes close in that it was an authorized UN
DC> intervention. Then again, it was more of a civil war, even though
DC> the Chinese were directly involved for the north.

Kim Il Sung was a creature of Moscow. His bosses thought he was strong
enough to conquer the south quickly enough that it would be a fait accompli
before the US or the UN could do anything about it. He d*mn near succeeded.

MacArthur's landings behind the North Korean forces put a stop to that invasion,
and the UN forces eventually pushed the North Koreans up against the border with
China and Russia. At which time about 300,000 Chinese 'volunteers' came across
the border and overwhelmed the UN forces with 'human wave' attacks, pushing the
UN forces back below the 38th parallel. Ridgway halted the retreat and started
pushing the Chinese back north (with horrendous casualties) using overwhelming
amounts of land and sea based artillery and bombing. When that happened the North
suddenly decided to get serious at the peace talks at Panmunjom. Four years of war
condensed into one paragraph...
