I attended both parochial and public schools between 1950 and 1962.  
Parochial schools also recognize a couple of holidays the public schools
don't (Columbus Day being one of them).

During that period there was no organized prayer in the public schools.
That's not to say that some of us didn't silently say a quick one just
before a test...
