Richard Dawkins invented the word "meme" to describe any idea that appeals to humans, and that can pass from one to another. For example, someone may invent a tune that appeals to others who hear it, and they hum the tune, and so the tune spreads. Good tunes are further developed and made part of larger works by other composers. Or, as you suggested, I might post a story here about a little old lady who beat off a burglar with her walking stick, and others may repeat my story with embelishments, making it a more appealing tale. Thus an urban legend is born. Then there are good memes, such as "Do unto others as you would have others do unto you".
