I have a friend that have an illegal copy of XP that is unable to update.
If your copy is leagal, can it have (by misstake) been registred as an illegal by MS?
I belive that there is a FAQ site at MS, have you visited that? Or phoned
MS and ask why it doesn't work? If you have a legal copy you must be
able to get some answers from them.
