They have expanded the rules for reporting to the Treasury. It's no longer
just the 10,000 cash rule. Multiple smaller deposits can also trigger a
report , wire transfers etc. I suspect you would be surprised at how much
the banks are watching and reporting ( I was ). Not only cash
transactions but also suspicious activity. Also the definition of financial
institution has expanded. Just taking a casual look at some of the rules on
the US Treasury site made me wonder how any small bank could know, much
less follow all the regulations
ALL of the variations of this particular story seem to tie back to one
story so I'm very leery of its accuracy.
