I don't think these were ever made out of stainless steel. Seems to be cost cutting - and have seen this will all the automakers. Part of it I think is because they really don't want the vehicles to last. They want you to buy new ones every 3-5 years. I don't fit that mold. Speaking of the rust issue, cheap outdoor grills (and even some expensive ones) do the same thing.
