Dear Matt,
The reason I am particularly interested in behaviour disordered students
being mainstreamed, is due to the fact that I have seen the effect that these
students have on others in the class.
I am a fourth year education student at Sydney University, and my last prac
(in a regular class) included a student who was classified as "behaviour
disordered" but could not be found a place in a "special school". His
teacher would let him do his own thing even if this meant sacrificing the
education of the other students.
Please don't think that I am completely against mainstreaming students - I
think that if it was done properly it can be quite beneficial. The problem
occurs when the Department of Education does not provide the support.
"Officially" in the state of NSW yeachers must be "asked" if they want one of
these students but more often than not this does not happen.
Love to hear your view!!! Jenine.
