Gee, you guys must have radar or something. H-W Region has been in the
process of reorganizing into 5 areas from the previous 13 divisions;
each area ideally having 1000 members. The area names are based upon
the history of commerce in the respective areas. The first area formed
was Kingshead: based on the Kingshead Inn located close to what is now
the QEW and Hwy.20, it was one days travel to Toronto or Niagara making
it the natural spot for commercial travellers to eat and sleep. The
second area was Albion Mills: based on the mills located at the Albion
Falls which physically join the two former divisions and which also
represent the agricultural and commercial aspects of the area. Each
area designed it's crest based on open submissions from within their
respective areas and criteria from Regional Council. It is interesting
to note the similarity between the two given that they were created
independently.
The third area was announced last spring to be Mohawk Trails, replacing
the Algonkin division: there is a whole lot of history about this area
which can be found in the Mohawk Trail School Museum. With 3/5 of the
region reorganized the council decided to complete the process by merging
Ancaster and Dundas divisions into Hermitage Springs (based on a common
geological and commercial locale) and the former Seneca, University and
Aldershot divisions into Dundurn area (with Dundurn Castle in the center).
The process of developing new crests is no doubt under way, but I have
no indication of when they will be approved. Having gone through the
process in Albion Mills I know that there are a few bumps in the road,
but some of them were smoothed by us and the good folks from Kingshead.
My best guess is that the three new areas will hope to have new badges
available for September.
A rather long-winded response, but I thought you might appreciate some
history behind the new badges.
Are any of you in Windsor coming to our annual Victoria Weekend
International Camp? It's our 40th anniversary, and from what I have
heard the only other Ontario camporee with this much longevity is in
Wallaceburg District (their 40th is in the fall). Of course we'll have
a badge ...
