Jakki, C++ may be the recommended starting place depending on what you
want to accomplish and in what time frame. It also may not be the way
to go.

Which operating system are you using?--that is more important the
specific hardware. If you want to program for Windows I would
recommend you look at Visual Basic from Microsoft or Delphi (Pascal)
from Borland rather than C++.
The learning curve for Basic is much less steep than that for C++,
especially under Windows. You will be able to have something useful in
a much shorter time. C++ may be 'overkill' for your needs at this
time.
Also, you might be able to get a good deal on VB with an academic
discount if you teach in any capacity.
