Debbie, keep the dog *inside* at night and be *sure* you have all his/her 
shots up to date.  Rabies is not a joke.  Coyotes are quite happy to eat a 
dog if given a chance and they come in packs so your dog even if big, is 
alone and no match for them.
How to scare them off?  See those big plastic windmill looking flowers?  They 
work for this relatively well if the coyotes arent starving.  Wont keep them 
far off, but will keep them out of the yard itself.
