JH>Sorry if I'm re-asking any of this, I just joined the echo a little
JH>while ago.
JH>I'm looking for some more information on the Hayes 56k upgrade offer.
JH>Specifically, can I send in my old external BocaModem 2400, and for 99+S&H
JH>upgrade it to a 56k external? Will the 56k modems be upgradable once the
JH>ITU standard comes out? (or is it ANSI, or they the same? I'm still pretty
JH>much in the dark on that) Also, will the 56k modems be useable as server
JH>modems on things like BBSs? I've gotten the impression that they won't be
JH>able to, but I haven't read anything that comes out and says that.
JH>Thanks,

Josha,
See the previous message I just sent in this conference as well, but
yes, Hayes will upgrade any modem from any manufacturer to 56K.
For your modem the cost to upgrade to an external 56K would be $99
plus $15 shipping/handling. There will be an upgrade option to the
final 56K standard (whatever the ITU-T comes up with). These are 56K
client side modems. If you use them as servers for incoming calls they
will work just like 33.6K modems. You will only get 56K download speeds
when calling into a service that supports server side 56K (which requires
that they have a digital connection to the phone company). Basically you
would have to be calling into an ISP or large commercial online service
to access 56K. So, we have all the info on the 56K upgrades on our web
page (if you don't have web access, then you would have no use for 56K
client side modems! At least I can't think of any instance where you
would, anyway).
If you haven't already, visit our 56K upgrade page at the following URL:
http://www.hayes.com/56k/upgrade
After you've selected your model and date of purchase, it'll tell you what
your upgrade option will be. At the bottom of that page, you'll find a
form where you can leave your contact information. If you'll complete that
form we'll email you as soon as we have products available and are ready to
start taking orders for the upgrade.
Please note that when you trade-in to the Hayes 56k model - you will get a
Hayes 56k data/fax modem of the like platform back. What that means is that
you'll be getting the same style as your current unit in a Hayes 56k data/fax
modem (i.e., external for external). For an additional cost you can change
he
platform style (i.e., external to internal). You can also add additional
features to your new unit (i.e., voice).
Thanks for your interest!
