          BIBLE STUDY QUESTIONS, 02/12/1997 .............. JOHN 01:01-03,14
Background:-- John opens his prologue (verses 1-18), in words
which remind us of the opening of GENESIS. This identifies Jesus
Christ, God the only-begotten Son, with the eternal Word, through
whom all things were made. Through whom a new covenant of grace
          had now been instituted.
          1) A literal translation of verses 1-2 reads, "In the beginning
was [continuously] the Word, and the Word was [continuously] with
[toward/(in company) with] God, and the Word was God. This (one)
[/-He-] was [continuously], in the beginning with God!" In his
epistle, 1 JOHN, John makes every effort to show Jesus really was
a human being. Would you agree that here in the gospel of JOHN,
he makes every effort to show that Jesus truly was God?

          2) In JOHN 1:14a, John reveals a great mystery, "And the Word
became flesh, and dwelt [/tabernacled (i.e., lived temporarily)]
among us." Would you agree that through John, God here reveals
to us, that Jesus was at once both truly God and truly human?

          3) John wrote the gospel of JOHN, "so you might believe that
Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing, you may
have life in His name [JOHN 20:31]." Why was it necessary for
our salvation, that God the Son, while still being God, became
          also a human being?
