I used to think the summer reading program at the library approached
reading from the wrong perspective. I used to think the reward was the
escape to another world, another time, another place.
Of course that was during my child's pre-reading days. Last year was
the first year she participated as a reader. (Our library has a picture
book program to encourage nonreading siblings.) Caitlyn viewed the
award board and set her sights high. (Too high I thought.) With some
motherly prodding during the summer play months, she did achieve the
highest award.
By having a goal that she determined and she achieved, her reading
skills improved exponentially!! (She really liked giving reports to
the library assistants, someone different than mom. Giving the report
to this other person helped bring her out of her shell.)
I am now a promoter of the program and urge all the neighbor kids to get
involved. No one loses in a reading program.
Good luck!
