I became obsessed with removing this bolt. I probably spent about 3 hours
trying everything short of drilling it out. It is very badly stripped now,
but my "grabber bit" was still holding it. It just wouldn't
budge even after repeated torching followed by cold water, liquid wrench,
hammering, 600 pounds of torque using an air impact gun.

When I called the mechanic shop that I deal with and explained the
situation, he said "Don't feel bad - the same thing happens to
us".

I asked him what he would have done - and he said the last resort would be
drilling it out. That is the only thing I didn't do - and these are thick
and solid bolts.

He also mentioned something I already knew. The fact that even with that
bolt out, many times the wheel bearing itself will be seized to where it
mounts. It can take some abuse with a hammer to get out, but sometimes you
have to really nail it which will break the bearing. I have been in that
situation before, too.

The way I see it, all these parts are 12 years old and rusty. I am just
going to replace them all since they have to be removed anyway for the CV
axle.

I have the replacement power steering pump with reservoir and pully, the CV
axle, new wheel bearing bolts (from dealer), new serpentine belt, and I
also just ordered a new front wheel bearing from RockAuto (Timken - made in
USA). They are the best and I have used them in the Monte Carlo. The ones
made in China are garbage and will have to be replaced again in 1-2 years.

I already replaced the power steering lines that connect to the steering rack.

I had a nice long conversation with the shop on repairs, etc. It was nice
to hear that I wasn't alone with these problems. They just have about 100
times the amount of tools that I do, plus way more experience - been there
and done that.

I just have to go back to a saying my Mom told me when I was young (and
still tells me).

"It is better to try and fail than to never have tried at all."
