Ok, maybe I'll wait until they release the firmware proper.
 
I just flashed in the firmware for the Smartmodems (r7) version 2.73B.  It
has almost nothing new in common with the Socket Rocket firmware
except for a few more diagnostic tools such as Ring Cadence.  So perhaps
there are 2 possibilities.
 
1) the two firmwares are going off on different branches.
2) they are bug fixing the better one and will be incorporating it into the
Smartmodems sometime...

No,  not even under the greatest level of diagnostic info,  when it tells
you symbol rate, and MNP packet info and everything else possible,  it will
still only display the one connect speed.
