I've never used dv, but it seems like it handles things differently. The
program worked ok though with my DOS/WIN setup. Looking at a reference it
says that IRQ-0 (8) is intercepted by dv. Perhaps that's why the program
crashed.

Yes, the command prompt looks like it goes through various DOS interrupts.
You'll notice the "blue" border on disk i/o and when other functions are
called, like keyboard input.

Yes it does, but you probably only need it when using the DOS interrupts.
Hopefully you would be safe using a BIOS call or other interrupt for
things.
