For example the southern "royal" colonies (Virginia,Georgia, Maryland, Carolinas etc) were predominantly Anglican. The main fight in the north was between the Puritans, Anglicans & the Quakers (e.g. Franklin) as William Penn had been a Quaker & then his sons reverted to Anglicanism. e.g. the whole Anglican Proprietary Party & it's opposition the imaginatively named "Antiproprietary Party". A big kickstart to the whole effort to try & bring the churches back under Anglicanism was oddly enough the Salem witch trials which appeared to show that the Puritan sects could not be trusted not to become nutty & thus a threat to the general order & well being of the colonies. As an example: http://www.dinsdoc.com/greene-3-6.htm In many ways the Anglican/Dissenter scrap is what helped to crete the US & is what ensures things like your state-churhc split in the constitution.
