Heating very slowly gives the base time to warm up also.  This will
increase the working time.  Same is true with the mirror.  If the mirror is
cold, it will tend to quickly cool the surface of the lap, though the lower
layer is still soft.  Have a cold bucket of water near by so that you can
immerse that lap when finished, especially if the base is warm. It will
continue to 'ooze'.

As always, there is a lot of variables.  These are things I have noticed.
