THC> Anybody else tried using a regular CB antenna as a scanner antenna?
I tried a couple... My Bandit base antenna would not work any better
than my rubber ducky and it was at 56 feet... I have a radio shack
"groundless" fiberglass job originally purchased for my boat that
performed decently well in the VHF high band but wasn't very
effective for any others... didn't have much luck with any of my
mobile CB antennas though they did perform better than the Bandit or
the rubber duck.
Seemed as though the higher the gain of the antenna, they worse they
worked on any other band that they weren't designed for. The Bandit
was rated at 9.9 dB, the mobiles ranged from 3 to 5 approximately,
and the "groundless" could barely be classified over a coat hanger.
The base and the "groundless" cost more than the base scanner antenna
that I bought and I am quite happy with its performance (as I can
pick up cordless phones at nearly a mile away off the edge of the
decently tall and steep hill that I live on...)
