Nancy and I were volunteers with a homeless shelter during most of the 90s.

I was a founder of the shelter, Nancy a board member, and some of my best
friends are on the current board (including the vice president and
treasurer). Joanne, Nancy, and I all worked the first night the shelter was
opened (October 2, 1992). I also handled the data for the first year of the
shelter, since there was no staff beyond volunteers. I can tell you that
there were mentally ill people among the people we sheltered. We also
provided temporary and permanent housing to some of those same people, as
the program continues to do. They are not exploited, despite what you might
say.
