Michigan's economy  has been stuck in the doldrums for some time. She
inherited a mess from Engler. Granholm's approval ratings actually improved
a bit from 47 to 49 percent.  The GOP controlled Legislature in turn fell
from 51 percent to 40 percent.

She will need a good turnout from southeast  Michigan to remain in power
though and there is a hint of animosity between Granholm and the mayor of
Detroit Kwame Kilpatrick. Whether he decides to give lukewarm support ( ala
Coleman Young ) remains to be seen
