For retrieve stable version (or release) try to use -r "tagname"
option of cvs
checkout (or cvs update) command, for example:
cvs up -r smapi-2_2-stable smapi

Use `cvs status -v` command for see avaiable cvs tags, usualy:
cvs status -v Makefile
