DR> How so? Did they issue a new CD in the past 3 weeks? And how
DR> would they know it is a fax line?
I have no idea. The last CD I saw in the stores was a year ago (didn't b uy
it - we don't need to do that any more)
DR> I only had it installed as a second line. The
DR> phone company had no
DR> idea whether or not it would be used for voice, fax, data, or
DR> computer.
I have no idea how the lists are compiled originally. all I know is that
they exist quite legally and are sold over the counter in computer stores,
and the ones listed as "business phone numbers" (complete with name and
address) are phone numbers, and the ones listed as "business fax numbers" are
nearly all business fax numbers. Where the information originates or how is
a mystery.
DR> I wouldn't say that. Many years ago when the first Commodore 64's
DR> came out one of the first major programs that was available (in
DR> certain circles) was a "war dialer."
DR> It would start at any number you set it for and it would continue
DR> to dial sequentially for days at a time. The prg. would register all
DR> non-voice numbers it found. Thus allowing you to "hack" those
DR> computer numbers that were found by the prg.
It's possible that's how lists are compiled.
LC>If it is totally against the law in your state, go for it.
DR> Perhaps you mis-read the post. It is _FEDERAL_ law.
I only recall you talking about your state. I don't recall any reference to
Federal Law. I know laws on most things vary from state to state the same as
they vary from Province to Province. It is not federal law in Canada, though
each Province restricts it in a different way. The CRTC recently came out
with new rulings that will be in effect nation wide which makes fax
advertising even more restricted than it was, and it had a full page of
restrictions before this.
DR> And when someone breaks the law but applying their fist to your
DR> face, do you stand there and take it or do you assume a defensive
DR> posture?
There is a vast difference between being in physical danger and not wanting
to spend a few cents on fax paper. The reponse to protecting your life is
different from the response to requesting that no more faxes are sent to your
number. Over-reaction is not good business practice, and is not economically
advantageous.
