In a message dated 06-10-15, mark lewis said to Holger Granholm: Good morning Mark, HG> Since the speed of sound is 360 m/s, 4 seconds will show that the strike HG> was about 1.44 km away ml> ahhh... so maybe it should be a 5 second count then... i always got ml> mixed up and settled on 4 seconds... it is only an estimate, ml> anyway... one might count their "one one thousands" too fast or too ml> slow... Well, 1.44km is quite close to one mile (=1.6 km) so if you want to keep that 4 second count it will tell you that the distance to the lightning strike was a bit less than one mile. OTOH, you may also want to keep an eye (ear) on the speed by which the thunderstorm is closing in. There's nothing that says that if the previous strike was one mile away the next one can't hit you directly.
