>Who is Louis Riel?

Louis Riel (1844-1885) was a Canadian historical figure. He was a Metis
(h= alf-Indian,
half-European, usually of French descent). By 1869, he had become somethin= g of
a leader among the Indians and Metis in the Red River Settlement (what is n= ow
Winnipeg, Manitoba), which when the land was administered by the Hudson Bay
Company (Canada's oldest corporation, then a fur-trading enterprise, now a
= chain
of department stores) had a fair degree of autonomy. In 1869, the Hudson B= ay
Company, by order of the British government, transferred its vast holdings
= (basically
the entire Canadian Shield area) to the Canadian government, which in turn
imposed its own administration on the Red River Settlement. Louis Riel
led=
 a
rebellion against this new administration, but was defeated. He fled the c= ountry,
but returned in 1884 to Saskatchewan, where he led some further rebellions
of the native peoples against the central government and the
newly-establis= hed
provincial and territorial governments. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police
(then called the Northwest Mounted Police) were formed to deal with these
r= ebellions
and insurrections, and in 1885, they captured Riel. He was tried and convi= cted
of treason and hanged in 1885. Many years later, he was somewhat rehabilia= ted
and was seen as an early native leader attempting to do what was best for
h= is people.
His convicton for treason was overturned in the 1980's and he was given an = official
pardon (clearly symbolic, of course). Some actually view him now as a posi= tive
figure and regard his as a "father of Confederation" for bringing
native is= sues to the
forefront.

In Canada, Riel is obviously an historical figure of some note, although so= me still
claim that he was a rebellion leader and that his conviction on treason was=
 justified.
Nevertheless, because he is generally unknown outside of Canada, it is unli= kely
that his name would grace a starship since people would ask, "Who's
Louis R= iel?"
Your average Canadian would know (assuming he is somewhat aware of history,
but not all are), but only the most dedicated students of history outside
o= f
Canada would know. I think it's the same with Michael Gray's Chamberlain
(see, I even forget his first name, is it Jerome?), which may be why that
i= s not the
best name to use. Of course, Michael is free to name his ships as he wishe= s, but
perhaps he should have used the full name and called it the U.S.S. Jerome
Chamberlain. In Steve-Trek, I tend to limit using the names of people as
s= hip names
unless that person is generally well-known, and I would favour scientists o= ver
political leaders and military types.
