I was attending a Catholic high school in Detroit when Kennedy ran for
president. I remember the question being asked ( Papacy influence ) but
most saw it as an honest question and didn't take any offense by it. The
Catholic belief is that the Pope has the final say in matters of faith and
morals ( ex Cathedra ) and the way the question was posed in the 60s was a
far cry from the slander politics of this era.
