LR| How do I use TFW as a TELNET client?
What you need to do is install the telnet connect device in TFW if you
haven't already, then create a separate config file with the telnet
device as the default. Finally, you need to make sure TFW uses this
config file when you want to use it as a telnet client.
First, run TFW, select "General options" on the Configuration menu, and
turn off the "Auto-save configuration" option. This will keep you from
fouling up your regular config file while you're doing all this. You
can turn it back on when you're finished if you want.
To install the telnet connect device, choose "Connect devices" on the
Configuration menu, then click on "Add," choose the WinSock connect
type, and the Telnet connect port. Click on "Install," highlight the
Telnet connect device, and click on "Make Default."
[An optional step at this point would be to create an alternate phone
book for telnet usage... but this can wait until you're sure everything
is working correctly.]
Next, on the Configuration menu, choose "Save as..." and give your new
config file a name -- telnet.cfg is a good one.
That's it for the TFW setup. All you need to do now is to tell TFW to
load this configuration file instead of the usual one. To do this, you
need to change the command you use to run TFW, and add the -C switch to
it, like this:
  c:\tfw\telix.exe -Cc:\tfw\telnet.cfg
If you're using Windows 95, the easiest way to handle this is to create
a new shortcut. In Win 3.1, a separate icon in Program Manager will do
the job.
That should have you set to run TFW as a telnet program. To actually
connect, you would need to connect to your ISP, then run TFW with the
above command, and "dial" the URL -- either manually or via the dialing
directory. The "number" you want Telix to dial is the URL minus the
"telnet://" part and without a trailing slash. For example, to telnet to
deltaComm's BBS, you'd tell it to dial bbs.delta.com -- and it should
connect.
LR| Where is it in the book?
I don't think it ever made it into the manual.
