I found the description from that clue.  The G-Sum code is using one of the
empirical dispersion formulas.  My own code uses an empirical formula to
get an "Abbe number" using only one wavelength's data.  It would
appear that this is insufficient, in that spherical aberration and coma are
corrected at a wavelength that is different from the minimum focus
wavelength.
