Thay've also been known to make good wine. As Christianity spread across
Europe so did monasteries and vineyards.  Then you Brits with Henry VIII
decided you had it with the monks 1000 years or so of   dominating the wine
market and  plundered the monasteries of their wealth and took control of
their assets. The French and other politicians soon followed and 'freed'
the wine. The rest is history . .
