If you're only going to use the tool for 1 or 2 pre-genned mirrors, you
can speed full contact by using sparse tile coverage. Such tools grind
down fast, and reach full contact quickly.
Tools like the one in the picture wear down less than 2mm to go through 220
grit, 25 micron, 9 micron - most of that wear occurs at 220 grit. I have
used much sparser tools with equal success. The old picture shows tiles
that are dug-out from the grout, but now I just let normal wear-down from
the grits open up the channels. An advantage of sparse coverage is that
slurry flow is very efficient.
