Hello Mark -

--8<--cut

ml> the goal, in this y2k case, is to not loose valid mail...
ml> there have been huge arguments about the volunteer mail
ml> movers manipulating the mail and this was one way to
ml> prevent the "filtering" argument...

This concern for loss of users is something new that was not
evident prior to Y2K.

CA>>>> 3 years and were dumping them as they are supposed to
CA>>>> Jean's 'solution' would be no solution at all.

ml>>> and he'd likely (many have and did) drop out due to
ml>>> frustration and lack of reply or comment since no one
ml>>> would be able to read his pleas for help...

CA>> There was ample warning to either update or replace non
CA>> Y2K OLRs. You are overstating their difficulty. The
CA>> problem was just self-interest and stubbornness IMO.

ml> there's a system in Net105, portland, or. that is still
ml> sending out y2k flawed messages... he never upgraded his
ml> software and doesn't appear to even be interested in this
ml> stuff any more... if forced, the system would be shut
ml> down... so, what do we, as fidonet, do? loose another
ml> system and what users there are using it or ???

Rewrite the 'official' FIDO webpages to include information for
the _users_ of FIDO that will enable them to connect to FIDO
BBS that are alive and well on the Internet. The dominate
'theme' that all who are interested in FIDO should run a BBS
probably scares many users way from it. Operating a BBS is not
for everyone believe it or not.

ml>>> the main goal of PKTDATE is to repair the dates in the
ml>>> PKTs that fidonet messages are carried within... there
ml>>> are several checks in place so that it is not a blind
ml>>> "fix the year" fix...

CA>> I will have to take your word for this.

CA>> Personally I found a Y2K OLR. :-)

ml> hehehe, i'm glad to have moved far beyond OLRs >

We've covered this before. Being a point or running a
single-user BBS, as many do, is overkill IMO.

What I use can fit on one floppy and it works. That others
stubbornly cling to abandonware does not mean we are _all_
inflexible and cannot acclimate ourselves to changing
conditions. With a proper OLR there are few, if any, problems.
