My older son has ADHD, but doesn't need to be in special ed -- just needed
some consideration from teachers when he was younger. MANY teachers have some
idea how to deal with ADHD kids, but some are clueless. You really have to
watch out for those who don't listen to moms and brush you off with "I know
all about ADHD" -- those tend to be the MOST clueless of all.
I dealt with all sorts of things - from teachers who wanted to "give him
a break" because of his ADHD (not a favor, as you well know) to teachers
who didn't understand why it was a mistake to interrupt him for frivolous
things if he was working well.
After 2 years of homeschooling, he has learned better coping skills. He
has matured significantly, and he is on 1/3 the ritalin dose he took when
I pulled him out of school. He's in high school now and doing quite well,
although it's stressful for him.
