I have no idea why it made a difference,but I switched from DSZ.COM to 
GSZ.EXE and it all works wonderfully again.
I have the com ports locked at 38400 and the BNU settings are back at 
default since after extensive fiddling with them it made no difference 
in performance.
Yes, the machine has the 16550AFN uarts, the modem is a US Robotics 
clone manufactured by Maxtech, 33.6,Data-Fax-Voice.
All I can make out of the situation was DSZ.COM is less capable of 
handling the speed, because as soon as I switched to GSZ.EXE everything 
works superb once again.
I was under the assumption that both protocols were the same except one 
was graphical and one was text, guess I was mistaken?
