Ben thanks for answering.  I think the problem must include my phone line
but my mates 14400 works okay at my place.  I am using a generic string for
14400 because I don't have any info on my modem.  I have also tried
resetting to the manufacturers default (ATZ) but that doesn't seem to work.
 Do you have any idea of what might be a likely init string to use.
