We made no such silly official statements wrt liberty & the pursuit of
happiness & all men being equal etc.

If you were a black briton of the period (& there were more than you
might imagine) then you were by definition not a slave.

Remember Rule Britannia came out in 1740 & contains the line:

"Britons never, never, never shall be slaves"

I note no similar American refrain.
