Rick,
I'm replying to your Feb. 6 message, but to spare us both time, I won't
quote. But first, I apologize for having to drop out so abruptly. Those
"ripples" you spoke about were more like tidal waves for a bit, added
to lots of other work. Feel like I'm swimming in a hurricane!
I see your point about pro bono attys. I _was_ unrealistic: goes to
show the tip of the iceberg of what we don't know. An amazing atty in
Reno, Terry Keyser-Cooper, enrages the city Powers by taking on cases
for transients & the poor, and _winning_. It only dawned on me that
she supports herself on these successes. I hear you.
We've decided (at least for now) to narrow the atty search to NV. I
contacted a friend's brother who's a work-comp lawyer in NV, but began
his career in Reno in public defense. He's willing to call some attys
for us. We're sending him info tomorrow.
Did you receive what we sent? Surely you've posted a msg. to me & I'll
know this when I start BBS'ing again. We'd really like to hear your
perspective. Chip has done a couple of tremendous organizational jobs:
wrote a timeline of Kriseya's case, 1 brief, 1 expanded, both updated.
I rewrote a brief overview. We'll need all this as introductory, over-
view material for a new attorney, in case of retrial, or in case of
exploring options if Kriseya is released.
I read the accounts of the couple you tried to help & the attorney who
cared but couldn't afford to close his doors to only help them--
and the evictions case. Lord, but this country's legal system needs
an overhaul! I think private courts may be the way to go for many
problems. Meanwhile, we struggle w/the present.
You said you planned to call the lady who tried to help w/the evictions.
Anything come of it?
We did disabuse ourselves of one erred notion--that all attorneys were
required to donate a certain number of pro bono hours. Apparently it
differs by state. No such thing as a requirement.
You ask if additional material can be presented for Kriseya in this
appeal. Don't know. No, they haven't heard it all, at least not to
my satisfaction. I've heard many things about judges: that they hate
reading really long appeals, however, Kim Hart (do you know of her?)
said to us, "Tough! I found 150 issues on one case. They don't read
these anyway--their clerks do it!" We also heard that they frown on
Pro Per (Pro se) supplements generally.
The NV Sup Ct. judges have been involved in a side issue for a few
years now: a district judge, Jerry Whitehead, has been in trouble
(even written up in Redbook magazine for his chauvinist views) for
consistent, prejudiced decisions against women & improper conduct
w/cases. Whitehead is friends w/2 of the Sup. Ct. judges, & it has
all been a wild case involving the city atty, state atty, FBI inves-
tigations, etc. This has **consumed** the judges' attention. What's
more, Vivian Lynch, Kriseya's attorney, was Whitehead's lead attorney,
and that led to crumbs of attention for Kriseya.
My inner voice has been stilled by the clamor around me. For now.
Kriseya, who's done so well, has been very emotional lately. Marty
Yant needs for her to write out her story because he wants to do a
book featuring her. K. faces writing about the past, and relives it.
Mourns her baby. Hard. Hard.
It's hard to believe you say you can't seem to get your hands on
enough material quickly enough. I cannot imagine what manner of man
can mentally digest what I _think_ must already be a lot coming at
you. Do you have America On Line or other service? Someone suggested
I subscribe to a forum called witchhnt (no u). I did this, and boy
was I sorry. **Too** much info. It would interest you because most
of it is about false accusations of child molestation. If you need
help on how to subscribe, I now know how to help you. Do you have an
email address? Ours is chipnclara@aol.com
Rick, Chip and I count you as a most special person in our lives.
Thought you'd like to know that.
Must try to get _some_ sleep. Sorry again for the unavoidable silence.
Hope to hear from you soon.
Blessings from Clara T.
