THC>Anybody else tried using a regular CB antenna as a scanner antenna?
  I use a Formula 1 magnet-mount CB antenna occasionally on a second
vehicle. I didn't want to buy another mobile scanner antenna for the
vehicle because I rarely use it. It already had a CB and combination
AM/FM/CB antenna (both of which were factory built-in) but they really
sucked so I decided not to jack into that antenna.
But I did want something available when I wanted to use the scanner
in that vehicle and that antenna was just lying around. The Formula 1
is an excellent CB antenna, handles a lot of power and is pretty
durable. And it does pretty well for a quicky down-and-dirty scanner
antenna. Of course, receives better on the lower bands but doesn't do
too bad in the 800, surprisingly.
It's a very tall antenna and on the roof of a car it gets a lot of
stares. Works pretty good if you don't have anything else, anyway.
The magnet mount RS scanner antenna for the car works great though.
Mine's quite old and now the magnet has come off the base. I'm not sure
how to repair it but I'm thinking of taking it apart and putting it on a
trunk-lid mount from an old CB antenna. Not sure what the innards looks
like but I think I could get mounted on that base. Hate to take the
scanner antenna apart because it still sticks on the magnet pretty good
and if I take it all apart and can't mount it on that other base I'll
have neither.
