subject: Win95/Courier INF mod

FF>> I'd be happy to detail what I did if anyone wants to know.

 RB> Yes please

OKay.

Open up a folder pointed to \Windows\Inf.

You will see that the modem .inf files are split into the different files
for each manufacturer, and then split again for different products. Find
the file named MDMUSRCR.INF, and back it up, (just in case ... ).

Double click on the file. This should fire up Notepad. You should see the
following at the top of the file -

; Windows Modem Setup File
; Copyright (c) 1993-1995 Microsoft Corporation
; Manufacturer: U.S. Robotics, Inc. (Courier)

Click on Search/Find... and type in "reset". You should see the following -

[MfgAddReg]
HKR,, InactivityScale, 1, 3c,00,00,00
HKR, Init, 2,,
"AT&F&B1&C1&D2&M4&K1E0Q0V1&A3"
HKR,, Reset,, "ATZ"
HKR, Monitor, 1,, "ATS0=0"
HKR, Monitor, 2,, "None"
[section continues]

First, do *not* be tempted to change the init string! If you must have your
own init string, enter it under Control Panel/Modems, select you modem,
then Properties/Connection/Advanced. Anything you type in the Extra
Settings box will override the Win95 init.

What you do want to change is the "HKR,, Reset" line above.
Simply change the "ATZ" to something harmless, like
"AT".

Save this modification.

Open up Control Panel/Modems.

Select the Courier modem, and click Remove.

Click Add, and reinstall you modem. You need to do this in order for the
above change to take effect. (You will need to redo any changes you made
under Modem Properties, such as error control and DTE speed.)

And that's it! Whenever you now use Dial Up Networking, Hyperterminal, or
any TAPI enabled application, after finishing, Win95 will not reset the
modem, so you can get the connection stats from the modem.

I use the following script I wrote for Telix -

=== Begin: Usrstat.Slt ===

main ()
        {
        capture("c:\logs\usrstats.log");

        // Change to your own path/filename.
        // The file will be appended to.

        cputs("ATI6I11^M");
        terminal();
        waitfor("OK");

        capture("*close*");

        exittelix(0,0);

        }

=== End: Usrstat.Slt ===

Compile this script, "CS USRSTAT.SLT", and set up a shortcut to
Telix with the following command line -

Telix -o -susrstat

(The -o option tells Telix that you are online, and not to init the modem.)

There you go. Now, not only will you have reams of stats from BBS calls,
but from Net calls as well :-)

Good luck!

Regards,
Frank
