I know you're posting whatever you can to defend your side against the
perceived attack from the retired generals, however, please consider some
advice from an outsider: Read what some of these people are saying!

I suggest that attempts to portray the comments from the retired generals
as sour grapes from unethical has-beens is going to end very badly - the
suggestion doesn't pass any kind of plausibility test.
