Sounds like it is worth doing. If only as an experiment. I am working on
some laminate materials that are very rigid and which will make a good
solid base for the mat. We'll see what happens. If it fails, I'll report in
and fall back to the 6-point cell.

Ditto. After all, what is it going to cost you? There's a long tradition
in the dobsonian universe of perverse ideas working well (like the sling,
for instance). But if it doesn't work out, PLEASE let us all know.
