Unfortunately, since the noise was intermittent Telstra were relunctant to go looking visually for a fault, and generally beat around the bush replacing things that clearly weren't faulty. I must have had my sockets looked at about 10 times. Luckily, one technician did go searching (the noise hung around a little longer) and found the fault. Problem solved.
