Hallo Clark!
Op 28 Sep 96 schreef Clark Ray aan Steven Van Impe:
CR> OK, we've got some similar tastes. That's my favorite Parsons Project
CR> album and I like Floyd's _Wish You Were Here_. As for Marillion, I
CR> went nuts for _Misplaced Childhood_ when I first got it, but I got
CR> rather tired of it.
It's the only real Marillion-album I've got for the moment (B-Sides is more
of a compilation, I think), I play it almost every day. And I don't get tired
of it (yet ?)
CR> There are still many parts of it that I like, though. My favorite
CR> Marillion is _Fugazi_. Most don't like it, but I do. It's the album
CR> that came out right before _Misplaced_ so you might want to try it
CR> out.
I'll look for it (but Marillion isn't very well-known in Belgium, I will have
to go to the very big and rather expensive music stores.)
CR> I haven't heard any Porcupine Tree, but I do recommend IQ, especially
CR> considering your other tastes. Definitely get _The Wake_.
It's on my 'to try'-list
CR> You'd like Camel a great deal, too, I'd bet. I don't know how willing
CR> you are to do it, but I'd like to suggest a 2-disc compilation of
CR> Camel called _Echoes_. I suggest this because it contains songs from
CR> their many different styles from 1973 to 1992.
If it isn't too expensive, I'll try it out. But being only 17, I can't spend
much of my money to music.
CR> What's more, it would be a great intro to many different styles of
CR> Prog. If you don't want to make a commitment to a 2-disc set, try ANY
CR> Camel you can find, let me know what you think of it, and I'll direct
CR> you from there.
Okay, Coach
CR> If you haven't tried any Yes yet, you should.
I know, but I haven't found any album so far (in my regular store).
CR> They are such a treat and more than a few of their songs have that
CR> feeling of "yes, this is IT."
It's on top of my list.
CR> As for King Crimson, that may be a bit more complex than you are
CR> accustomed to, but, they are a must-hear for anyone into Prog and
CR> they've put out three of my all-time favorite albums: _In The Court If
CR> The Crimson King_, _Larks' Tongues In Aspic_, and _Red_.
All on the above-mentioned list (getting very long by now)
CR> And then there's Genesis. I was, and still am mostly, a freaked-out
CR> fanatic of their music.
CR> _Selling England_ is a good starter for the Gabriel era of Genesis,
CR> but you may have found it to be a bit flat; I kind of do.
I dunno. I keep it for more quiet hours (when my parents are asleep).
CR> I suggest their 1977 live album called _Seconds Out_. Phil is on
CR> vocals, but most of the songs are from the Gabriel-era.
I don't really like the sound of his voice. Too 'flat', IMHO. But I'll put it
on my list.
CR> You're still at a very early stage in this stuff and we need to have a
CR> better idea of what you like already.
I haven't had much time to discover any music by myself yet, the way I work
right now is this: if I hear a song like, I try the album. If I like the
album, I try the rest of the band. If I like the whole repertoire, I try
anything that comes near to them. Like this, I 'hopped' from Pink Floyd to
Deep Purple and APP, and from Jarre to Vangelis and Marillion. Haven't
encountered many things I don't like so far. It's just that there's too much
to buy.
CR> Before I recommend any other bands, I'd like to know some more about
CR> your tastes. How are you for Fusion/Jazz?
I don't go very 'wild' for it, but I don't run away from it, either. Haven't
really tried it, so far.
CR> What instruments do you seem to pick out first when you hear music?
CR> For me, it's the drums, bass, and anything else in the rhythm section.
Definately the drums. I always try to figure out if the drummer sticks to the
beat, or tries to actually do something too. Nick Mason is my favourite,
especially in the early days (Atom Heart Mother - Meddle - Dark Side)
CR> Anyway, stick around here. We'll help.
Thank you very very much. I'll post you as soon as I have found any album you
mentioned.
Met vriendelijke groeten,
Steven
... I'm from the government. I'm here to help you.
